MANDI BUNGA

Spa Village Tanjong Jara offers every guest a special pre-treatment ritual that honours local culture and heritage. Called mandi bunga, the ceremony originates from royal palaces as part of the formal procedures in the coronation of a new king, practiced by Malay healers to rid the body of negative energies. The ritual also forms part of coming-of-age celebrations and is administered to a Malay couple seven days before their wedding day.

At Tanjong Jara, a special daily procession sees seven women carrying brass trays with seven sweet-scented flowers and seven men carrying water jars or buyong. From the lobby to the spa, water is scooped from jars along the way, symbolising the seven sources of fresh water: namely rain, well water, river, stream, spring, waterfall and lake.

When the procession arrives at the spa, the water, along with the seven different flowers, is transferred into 175-year old jars recovered from the Desaru shipwreck. They are then used in the mandi bunga, a special cleansing ritual where therapists bathe guests from head to toe seven times with blessings of purity, sincerity, health, beauty, happiness, prosperity and longevity.
